When Ernesto Quintana, lawyer for Barcelona’s private water supplier Baraqua S.A., is found drowned in the pond of the company’s golf course, it quickly becomes clear that he was murdered. Did his wife Xenia kill him out of jealousy because he was having an affair with a client?
Soon, however, another layer of the story emerges: due to a seemingly endless drought, Baraqua S.A. has been gradually rationing the city’s water supply. The hardest hit are the olive growers, who can no longer irrigate their plantations because Baraqua has shut down their irrigation canal. As a result, farms that have been in the same families for generations are now on the brink of collapse.
Miguel Garcia, head of the region’s largest olive growers' cooperative, turns out to be Xenia’s father—making the victim his son-in-law. As detectives Fina Valent and Xavi Bonet discover, Ernesto once worked as a lawyer for Garcia’s cooperative. Did the olive farmer lose control and kill Ernesto in a fit of rage over his betrayal of the farming community?
And who has enough influence to keep putting obstacles in the path of the investigators? Fina and Xavi find themselves battling not only the heat, but also a web of lies, betrayal, and corruption.
